ABOUT US

Our Story
In 1982, a handful of families stepped out in faith and purchased a vacant school building with the hope and belief that God was at work in Hockessin. The church was named Hockessin Baptist Church and consisted largely of transient families looking for a spiritual home and family during their tenure in Delaware.
For three decades, Hockessin Baptist Church grew solid roots in the community and continues to draw new families. In 2012, God called us to plant a campus in downtown Wilmington. We hope this plant will be the first of many.
Our church has been blessed with a spirit of unity that holds our two campuses together under the banner of one church. In 2014, we adopted a new name to help reflect our unity of effort for God’s kingdom. It is our hope that God continues to use Sycamore Hill Church to reach this region.
Our Beliefs
OUR FAITH
We are Christians: followers of Christ who rely on the Bible as God’s word to us. We depend on the death and resurrection of Christ for purpose in this life and hope in the life to come.
OUR DENOMINATION
We are a Baptist church in friendly association with the Southern Baptist Convention with whom we partner to spread the hope of Christ both in this region and far abroad.
OUR STRUCTURE
We are a congregationally-governed, elder-led church that is committed to planting new campuses throughout our region. To know more about how our campuses relate to one another, see “Our Campuses” below.
OUR FEEL
Both of our campuses has its own feel and is generally reflective of the surrounding community.
Our Statement of Faith
The Holy Bible is the inspired Word of God and is the basis for our statement of faith. This church subscribes to the doctrinal statement of the Baptist Faith and Message as adopted by the Southern Baptist Convention, as outlined below. We encourage you to read through this document and reflect on the scripture references.
We as a local self governing church band ourselves together as a body of baptized believers in Jesus Christ, personally committed to sharing the good news of salvation to lost mankind. The ordinances of our church are baptism and the communion.
THE BAPTIST FAITH & MESSAGE
Our Covenant
Since our founding, our church has organized itself beneath a constitution. At the front of this constitution is a member covenant. Updated in 2015, our church covenant is a beautifully written and theologically inspired description of who we, the members of this church, commit to being. If you call Sycamore Hill Church home, we encourage you to read the covenant below. May all of our lives strive to resemble this.
CHURCH COVENANT
To learn more, or to discuss these beliefs, we invite you to join our next Welcome Lunch or request a meeting with an elder.
Our Approach to Ministry
Our approach to ministry is built around the belief that God wants His Kingdom to grow, spread, and mature.
GROW.
“Go therefore and make disciples…”
God desires that we would attract our friends and neighbors to the Faith. Faithful churches grow within their local communities.
SPREAD.
“…of all nations…”
God desires that His people bring the Gospel to new places and people. Faithful churches bring Jesus to new communities. This call has a local expression but extends across the expanse of the earth.
MATURE.
“…teaching them to observe everything I have commanded…”
God desires that His sons and daughters would be progressively and continually transformed into His likeness. Faithful churches nurture life in Christ as a continual process.
Our Campuses
AS A UNIFIED CHURCH COMMITTED TO PLANTING HEALTHY CHURCHES, WE HAVE PRAYERFULLY AND THOUGHTFULLY CONSIDERED OUR CAMPUS MODEL.
We believe the unity of God’s church is of great practical use to the Kingdom and should be leveraged – not merely celebrated. Preserving strong ties with our church plants is a reflection of our commitment to growing, spreading and maturing God’s Kingdom. While each campus operates very practically as a local church, we have chosen to collectively identify and entrust ourselves to one another in unity.
Our Hockessin Campus meets on Sundays at 9:00 am and 10:30 am for Worship, Teaching, and Fellowship. For directions, click here.
The Hill meets on Sundays at 10:15 am. For directions, click here.
Our Leadership
Our leadership consists of three dedicated pastors who are supported congregationally by deacons, elders, and church members. Additionally, we have caring ministry leaders for our children, youth, and adult ministries. Our support staff consists of several individuals striving behind the scenes to help the church function at its best. To learn more about these folks, click below.
